Our Family Safari is built for groups travelling with children — properties with pools and space to move, a route planned around the youngest traveller rather than the itinerary, and a private game reserve at the end so the trip finishes on the animals.
Three of the seven days involve a long drive — Namibia is that size — and we say so plainly rather than promising otherwise. What we have done is put a pool at the end of each of them.
Welcome to Namibia. Private transfer from Hosea Kutako and overnight in Windhoek. Time to relax after the flight.
Scenic drive south-west to the Sesriem area, with photo stops along the way. Check in at Desert Quiver Camp — private chalets with a pool, perfect after a travel day.
A relaxed morning visit to the dunes — children love climbing them, and the visit can be tailored to little legs. Afternoon at the lodge pool.
Drive west to Swakopmund. The cool coastal air is a welcome break. Check in at the Strand Hotel Swakopmund — beachfront and walkable to everything.
A full free day for family activities — quad biking, sandboarding, dolphin cruise, or simply relaxing at the beach. Plenty of family-friendly restaurants for dinner.
East on the B2 through Usakos and Karibib to Okahandja, then south to Okapuka Safari Lodge, a private reserve 30 km north of Windhoek — around 320 km and four hours. Check in, then out on the sunset game drive: about two and a half hours among giraffe, oryx, warthog and the reserve’s white rhino, finishing as the light goes.
The sunrise game drive leaves about half an hour before first light and runs two and a half hours — the best part of the day for the animals, and the last thing the journey does. Breakfast, then roughly an hour and a quarter to Hosea Kutako International Airport, arriving late morning. This day is planned around departures from 15:00 onwards.

Accommodation is subject to availability. The properties above are the lodges we aim to use on this journey. They are confirmed only once your booking is made and the lodge has accepted it. Where a property is unavailable for your dates, we will propose an alternative of an equivalent standard and location, and confirm it with you before booking.
Wildlife is wild. Game drives are planned around the seasons, waterholes and movements that give the best realistic chance of rewarding sightings, but no operator can guarantee that any particular animal will be seen. Routes and drive times may be adjusted for road, weather or park conditions, always in consultation with you.
How this journey is put together. SLM Safaris is registered with the Namibia Tourism Board as a Tour Facilitator (TFA01009). Road transport is provided in 4×4 safari vehicles supplied through our transport partners, and your guide is assigned to your itinerary from our network of professional guides and specialists. Game drives at Okapuka are run by the lodge; the Swakopmund and Walvis Bay activities are run by independent licensed operators and booked on your behalf. The meal basis at each property is set out in full on your written itinerary before you book.
Namibia is a year-round destination, but each season offers something different. Here's what to expect when planning your safari — and what each window is best for.
Peak game-viewing season. Days are warm, nights cold. Animals concentrate around waterholes. Ideal for wildlife and photography.
The best wildlife months — Etosha's pans are at their busiest. Days are very hot. Book early as lodges fill up.
The wet months. Lush landscapes, dramatic skies, fewer crowds, lower rates. Birding is exceptional. Some roads can be tricky.
The coast is cool and often misty whatever the season — a welcome change after the desert, and the reason the middle of this trip works in any month.
